FAQ: My style

One of the most asked questions at my consultations is about my style. "Are you photo journalistic or traditional." Of course most of the time my couples already know the answer somewhat but it's still on the list of questions to ask so they ask. This image is a perfect example of how I answer that question. My answer is this; I am neither. I embrace both. As a great photographer once said "I am the 'vs' in the photo journalism vs traditional debate." My background in fashion and interest in great light, perfect locations and eliciting emotion dictates that I don't leave everything to chance.

This shot is a perfect example of that. Donna and the girls wanted to do a shot by the water. I could have just stood there, taking shots as they walked down towards the water and not interfered at all. That's what it looks like happened but not quite. Sure, I DID just stand there and shoot while they walked down to the water but what isn't evident is that they were walking towards a spot I picked, to stand facing a direction I chose and with a bit of direction about how Donna should hold her dress, etc. The idea was that I directed the scene, put the actors (insert: bridal party) on the set the way that would be most flattering to them and the overall image and then began shooting before, during and after the "shot" we intended to shoot. The result? The best shot was actually made before they were ready. Sure, I set up the shot but in the end, it was about capturing Donna and her girls being themselves (thank you for so much of that Donna :), something that probably didn't happen nearly as much 20 seconds later when they were just standing near the water.
The morale to this story is that yes, I will occasionally direct the action to a great location, into some great light (that either exists or that I provide) but in the end, I look to capture the best moment, whether that be when I planned it to be or not. In that way I am both a photo journalist AND a traditional-ish photographer (just don't ever use the word traditional...hardly :)

SAMPLES: Donna & Ryan Wedding

Donna & Ryan's beach wedding was a fantastic experience. From a spectacular church (yes, Donna, it was :) to a great beach setting and a huge, open reception room overlooking the ocean, it was hard not to get some great images. Again, and as I always say in my consultations, Donna & Ryan (not to mention their attendants) being great sports, full of ideas and willingness to try something fun really helped.

SAMPLES: Liz & Nathan Wedding

Something happened with Liz & Nathan's pictures so I re-uploaded them.
Liz & Nathan's Cypress Grove Park wedding and reception was just as spectacular. Another thing that was great about this wedding was that they are members of a exclusive but growing club of couples deciding to do their "together" portraits before the ceremony. They bucked an old tradition to embrace a new tradition of the Reveal. Nathan turning around to see his bride for the first time was priceless and made for a great series of images.

IMPORTANT NEWS!!!

I am in the process of re-evaluating my online proofing solution based on the availability of many new options (I have been using the same company for 4+ years) and some suggestions from you all. While things will likely not change that much for existing galleries, any new galleries uploaded (that means you if yours are not online) will be hosted wherever I decide to host them. I apologize for the delay if you're waiting for your online proofs.

Also related to this change is a shift in overall policy regarding online proofing. Your online proofing gallery will now be smaller, more of a "greatest hits" to make for faster loading and browsing. This is a direct response to several past clients who liked having all their files online but found it slow going to find specific images or groups of images. For those looking for a full upload of their wedding, I will be creating a separate product/solution for that. I will be happy to address this on an individual basis if you have questions.

BIG NEWS!!!

Well, this is pretty much unexpected but recently I decided, with the help of one of my clients who also happens to be a great graphic designer (thanks Amanda...link here when I get one) and a new hosting solution, to change my entire brand identity and along with it, my website. It's 95% good to go right now but still needs a bit more work, especially in the Online Proofing area. Hope you like!

From this point forward, I will no longer be emailing sample images after your wedding/event. Instead each client will get their own password protected proof area. I think this will be a much nicer and convenient way to view your images.
In the not too distant future I hope to implement a large format projection or monitor viewing area in a meeting space where I can show you your images for the first time and answer any questions you may have. Look out for that announcement in the coming months.
